I have trouble choosing a target market. My background is PhD in Linguistics, and the types of clients and industries I have written for are sleep (wellness/health), language education (B2C), and a little bit of education technology (B2B) and presentation software (B2B). An obvious choice for me seems to be AI but the problem is that I don’t have any technical background (no background in computational linguistics or NLP), nor enough experience writing about it to understand if it’s something I would enjoy. I had one (not great) client in the conversational AI space, not enough for me to understand if I like it. When I was writing my consolidated list, AI for education or AI for special needs, and basically AI that makes peoples’ lives better seemed to attract me most. But are these too narrow to begin with? Should I go a little broader in order to find out what I like and where I have better chances finding clients? If so, how broad?

Hi, another question relating to settling on a target market. I have 10 years experience working in the arts which overlaps into entertainment, tv, film etc. I never thought about writing for this area before but when I looked at it, although I have plenty of contacts, there isn’t much funding in this area in this country and it doesn’t seem to meet the complex, expensive or innovative criteria. That said, I know that there is big money in entertainment, film etc in other countries, but I don’t have the contacts there. Should I just eliminate it and move on or am I missing something? Thanks.

A follow up question, if you have time. If I choose 3 very different markets such as healthcare, weddings & events and what I’m currently calling socio-political organisations, is it going to be difficult to position myself correctly across these 3 different areas? Will I be spreading myself too thin? Thanks again!

A question I’m sure was asked many times before. I’m almost done with my website copy, I just need to add a few tweaks and resubmit it for review. Next will be my LinkedIn profile. I understand that the material for Linkedin would come from our web copy, but is there any guideline we should follow to go from one into the other? Thanks!
